Che! Dame un cinco

Shadowing is working!!

Che! Cómo andas?

Welcome to the “Che! Dame los cinco” newsletter.

For the new folks joining us, I send these 4 things for you every Monday morning:

  1. a new word

  2. a new expression

  3. a piece of content

  4. an exercise for improving your Spanish

📖 Palabra - capricho

This is hard to translate to English, but I think giving the definition and an example will help you pick understand it.

capricho — Idea o propósito que uno se forma sin razón aparente

The key here is sin razón aparente. So now if we look at an example:

lo compré por capricho.

Reminds me of the things they stock near the checkout at a grocery store, also called “impulse buys” because you really don’t need them, but buy them anyway.

🗨️ Expresión - hacerle caso

Again, goal here is to stick to Spanish rather than translate so the definition for this is:

Escuchar, prestar la atención debida a algo o a alguien

And you know how I found the definition? By pretending I was a native speaker and searching like they would.

  1. Visit google.com.ar

  2. Search using terms I think they would “que significa haceme caso”

  3. Scroll down and see the “People always ask” suggestion

  4. Update search to “¿Qué es hacerle caso a una persona?

  5. Find definition that makes sense

I’ve been telling myself for months that I should start shadowing for multiple reasons:

  • improve my pronunciation and intonation

  • learn how to connect words better

  • improve my rate of speech

And so far, this approach is working well! Give it a try and let me know how it goes!

💪🏼 Ejercicio - Shadow x5 with one clip

  1. Pick a video on YouTube

  2. Clip 15-30s (example)

  3. Shadow the clip for 2mins

  4. Repeat 1-3 ×5

I’m doing this myself for the first time and really enjoying it. It doesn’t take much time and I feel like I’m actually starting to get better. I even record myself and upload it to YouTube so I can see my progress. Here’s the playlist.
