Welcome to the fifth issue of the “Che! Dame los cinco” newsletter.
For the new folks joining us, I send these 5 things for you every Monday morning:
a new word
a piece about Argentinian culture
a new expression
a piece of content I recommend
an exercise for improving your Spanish
📖 Palabra - boludo
One of the most common words associated with Argentinians, boludo can have lots of meanings depending on how you use it. It can be used with friends like in an endearing way, or it can be an insult. Depends on the tone and context.
Che, boludo, mira esto.
Sos re boludo.
🧉 Cultura - medialunas
Boludo, my mouth is watering just looking at these! I miss these so much. They're kinda like croissants but WAY better. You can try making them at home (but it is a lot of work).
🗨️ Expresión - agarrase un fomo
I heard this in this podcast episode and it's a mix of English and Spanish. agarrase to get in this case + un fomo as in a Fear Of Missing Out which is like when you are afraid that if you don't go to something (in this case, school), you'll miss out on something fun or important. Argentinians tend to borrow a lot of words from English so keep an eye out for unique expressions like this one.
🔗 Contenido - Tierra Incógnita
I don't know how I didn't hear about this sooner but it's a TV show that was released on Disney+ in September 2022. It's all in Argentinian Spanish and about a brother and sister who are trying to find their parents who used to run a horror-themed amusement park and disappeared one day. It gives off Stranger Things vibes and I'm really enjoying it. Only 8 episodes sadly but really good because the subtitles are accurate and it's pretty recent.
💪🏼 Ejercicio - Record a video
Pick any topic, ideally something you're excited about.
Set a timer for 2mins
Record a video of yourself talking about it
This is a great way to get in more speaking practice and it doesn't require much. I've been doing this for almost two-months now and it's helped a ton!
Thanks for reading! Espero que disfrutes la semana 😄
Abrazo de tu amigo,
- Joe
