Welcome to the 20th issue of the “Che! Dame los cinco” newsletter.

Che! Cómo andas?

Welcome to the “Che! Dame los cinco” newsletter.

For the new folks joining us, I send these 5 things for you every Monday morning:

  1. a new word

  2. a piece about Argentinian culture

  3. a new expression

  4. a piece of content I recommend

  5. an exercise for improving your Spanish

📖 Palabra - peli

Similar to how we shorten words like television to TV in English, Argentinians are known for doing the same thing. Can you guess what peli is short for?

Here’s an example:

Querés venir a ver una peli hoy?

If you guessed película, you were right! 👏

🧉 Cultura - 2023 Presidential Elections

The presidential election in Argentina is coming up next month. Normally, I don't pay much attention to politics outside my own country but my favorite podcaster did a short episode on it.

Here's a link if you're curious who the candidates are and what's happening:

🗨️ Expresión - me estás jodiendo

You may have seen joder before as a curse word. Well, in Argentina, it's used slightly differently. In this situation, it's when you're surprised. Equivalent to “are you kidding me?!”

My other favorite Argentinian podcast did a 2-min episode talking about what this expression means and how to use it.

For the longest time, I've been wanting a YouTube channel that's like Ms. Rachel but in Spanish. Finally, it exists!!

Although this isn't Argentinian Spanish, I wanted to share because I think you could use it if you're brand new to Spanish. I know you're probably an intermediate or advanced, but helpful to know of this channel!

Especially if you feel intimidated by native content and want to ease into it 🙂

💪🏼 Ejercicio - Playing two parts of a conversation

The other day, my daughter asked me to talk to her baby doll and have a conversation.

“Oh man…this is going to be tough” I thought to myself.

But then I just did it. I used a higher-pitched voice for the baby and then talked in my normal voice for my part. And I realized, this is a great way to practice talking more!!

When you play the two parts, you really test your conversational skills. Once you get past the awkward/weird feeling, you start to see your Spanish improve!

Give it a try and let me know how it goes!

Thanks for reading! Espero que disfrutes la semana 😄

Abrazo de tu amigo,
- Joe
