Che! Dame los cinco #14
Welcome to the 14th issue of the “Che! Dame los cinco” newsletter.
Che! Cómo andas?
Welcome to the“Che! Dame los cinco” newsletter.
For the new folks joining us, I send these 5 things for you every Monday morning:
a new word
a piece about Argentinian culture
a new expression
a piece of content I recommend
an exercise for improving your Spanish
📖 Palabra - plastilina
If you’re from the US, you’ve probably heard of Play-Doh. It’s that soft, squishy, dough-like material that you play with as a kid.
Well, the other day, I learned from my Argentinian friend how to say it in Spanish: plastilina
And to confirm, he sent me a link to MercadoLibre with the word searched to make sure it was the right thing.
This is common thing I've seen friends do. When I ask a word and they are unsure, they search MercadoLibre to make sure it’s right.
It’d be like us searching on Amazon.
🧉 Cultura - Nico Occhiato
You know how a while back I shared from #LUZUKIDS? So Nico is the host of that. And I really like him so I started researching him more.
Turns out — he is THE FOUNDER of LUZU TV 😱
I had no idea! You would never know either.
And now LUZU TV is this big media brand with 1.13M subscribers and several shows. It is incredible. This interview shares some of the secrets behind his success.
🗨️ Expresión - tengo unos ahorros en el colchón
I recently got laid off from my job (last Thursday) and my friend Tony used this expression. It basically means, I have a (savings) cushion.
The direct translation is I have some savings in the mattress. Probably because people used to (I doubt they still do?) hide cash in their mattress 🤣
🔗 Contenido - Soy Dalto
With over 700k subscribers, Soy Dalto is a very popular YouTuber from Argentina who makes videos related to programming.
Here’s a popular video about how to use ChatGPT:
💪🏼 Ejercicio - Walk and Talk
Look, I get it. It’s hard to find time during the week to meet with natives online to practice your speaking. That’s why I like Walk and Talk.
I came up with the name but the method isn’t new. You basically put in your headphones, go for a walk and pretend you’re on the phone
Except you do it in Spanish.
It definitely feels weird but it’s a great way to get speaking practice in. I used to do this when my daughter would only nap in the stroller. And it usually put her to sleep — win-win 😏
Thanks for reading! Espero que disfrutes la semana 😄
Abrazo de tu amigo,
- Joe
