Che! Dame los cinco

Don't say zapatos

Che! Cómo andas?

Welcome to the “Che! Dame los cinco” newsletter.

For the new folks joining us, I send these 4 things for you every Monday morning:

  1. a new word

  2. a new expression

  3. a piece of content

  4. an exercise for improving your Spanish

📖 Palabra - zapatillas

Another day, another word to unlearn. Apparently in Argentina, you don’t call common shoes zapatos. Instead, you say zapatillas. (zapatos means “dress shoes”)

My daughter’s favorite word is zapatos so this one’s going to be a hard switch…

🗨️ Expresión - andar con fiaca

It’s like saying you’re feeling lazy or don’t have a lot of energy. This was me last week when I running on little sleep.

Thanks to the lovely YouTube algorithm, this video from 2 years ago popped up on my feed. It’s about a guy who goes to Buenos Aires and tries to learn Spanish in one month.

It’s really cool to see how he approaches it and how he spends his time each day. And obviously, I love that it takes place in BA. I think you’ll like it. I felt very motivated after finishing it.

💪🏼 Ejercicio - Make Text Vocabulary Cards

I recently re-read the Refold guide and learned about different card formats. One of which is called “text vocabulary cards”.

  • The frontside has the word you’re learning

  • The backside has the definition and an example sentence

The key difference here is you’re focused on comprehension not production meaning your goal is to make sure you understand the word in isolation and it’s meaning. Not that you’re trying to translate it to your native language.

Thanks for reading! Espero que disfrutes la semana 😄

Abrazo de tu amigo,
- Joe
